There are many ways that employees participate as co-owners of the businesses where they work. Stock options, the most common, are usually accessible only to management. In contrast, broad-based employee ownership gives all employees who meet basic criteria the opportunity to become employee-owners. When we use the term “employee ownership” in this document, we are referring to broad-based employee ownership. The main forms of broad-based employee ownership are: Employee Stock Ownership Plans, Worker Cooperatives, and Employee Ownership Trusts
